Corian by DuPont – An Introduction

Corian® by DuPont™ was first manufactured in the 1960s and has been continuously developed ever since. It has a number of diverse applications, but what exactly is it and where can it be used?

Corian® is what is known as a ‘solid surface material’, in other words what you see on the surface goes right through the entire thickness of the material; it isn’t hollow, and it isn’t a thin coating or laminate surface on a cheaper core material such as chip board. Produced in three thicknesses – 6 mm (0.24 in), 12 mm (0.47 in), and 19 mm (0.75 in) – Corian is made from a combination of acrylic powder and alumina trihydrate, giving it immense strength and resistance to moisture.

Corian Is Easily Maintained

As it is solid, scratches and nicks are easily removed by buffing with a scouring pad or sander. Invisible jointing is possible at the fabrication stage by using DuPont’s own Corian acrylic epoxy. Corian can be cut, engraved and even heat modified, thus making freeform organic shapes possible, and it comes in lots of beautiful colours, patterns and translucency. And don’t worry – once installed it is as heat resistant as any other material.

Corian has many applications but is perhaps most widely known for kitchens, bathrooms and retail settings. Its ability to withstand wear and tear, and its impermeability, make it the perfect material for sinks, showers, changing rooms, laboratories, hotels and restaurants, but it also has some less obvious uses such as in nautical design and the exterior cladding of buildings.

As a worktop, Corian® performs brilliantly. First, from an aesthetic point of view. Whether you’re refitting an old house that has features to be complemented, or are starting from scratch and want to achieve the ultra-minimal look, Corian® is made for the job. Corian® looks terrific alongside glass, stainless steel and wood. In the hands of our fully-trained craftsmen it can be made to fit virtually seamlessly with backsplashes that hug the contours of the walls leaving no spaces for water, dirt and bacteria to gather. And, if you can’t find the right colour, you can have your own tailor-made – but remember that light colours show scuffs and scratches less than darker colours.

Second, from a maintenance point of view. All that is needed to keep Corian® worktops in pristine condition is normal daily care; a wipe with a damp cloth and household cleaner will take care of almost anything. The great thing is that Corian® is almost always repairable, whatever the damage. And because it is a solid material, say goodbye to those annoying and unsightly edges where the laminate strip peels away – with Corian® they are a thing of the past. Slipped with the knife? Don’t panic – just get your scourer and your worktop will be like new again.
